Yesterday saw Ibiza’s hottest September temperature since records began

Hot day Ibiza

The temperature of 38.4°C (101.12°F) recorded yesterday at Ibiza airport was the hottest September temperature since records began back in 1961. The sweltering heat considerably surpassed the previous record of 34.6°C from back in 1990. Oddly enough, this new high is in complete contrast with one of the coolest Augusts on record, with temperatures on average 1° cooler than usual thanks to a combination of wind direction and a couple of cooling summer storms, according to the Spanish National Meteorological Agency.

The agency also predicts, unfortunately for the island’s parched aquifers, a very dry September, although yesterday’s yellow alert has now been dropped, indicating a return to more normal temperatures for the time being, around the 30°C mark.

Islanders and visitors are urged to use water sparingly, keeping showers short, re-using towels in hotels and not allowing the tap to run as you shave / clean your teeth.
